Notice of Ballots

Important information about election ballots

Notice of ballot mailing

On or about February 21, 2013, the Alberta Teachers, Association will mail ballots for the Provincial Executive Council election to all eligible voters.

Ballots to schools

Ballot packages will be couriered to the attention of the designated ATA School Representative at every school in Alberta where there are more than three eligible voters. In the event there isn’t an ATA School Representative at a school, the package will go to the school principal. Ballot packages will contain ballots, voting instructions and a prepaid return envelope in which the school representative or principal can return the ballots completed by voters at his or her school.

Ballots to home addresses

Ballots and voting instructions will be mailed to the home addresses of substitute teachers, members on a leave of absence and associate members. Prepaid return envelopes in which the ballots can be returned will also be provided.

How can you help the Association make sure you get your ballot?

Have an up-to-date ATA online member account. Association members—teachers, administrators or associate members—can create an account by visiting www.teachers.ab.ca. Just click on the log-in icon at the top right-hand side of the homepage and follow the three-step instructions provided in the Account Request Overview.

Members who already have an ATA online account can update their information by logging in, clicking on Your Account and updating the fields displayed when Profile Update is selected. By making sure your school location and home address are current, you can help us get your ballot to the right location.

If you don’t receive a ballot

Any member who doesn’t receive a ballot may, no later than 5 p.m. on March 7, 2013, contact the Association to request that a ballot be sent to them. If the member is confirmed to be an eligible voter and completes the required declaration, the Association will issue a ballot to the member forthwith.

Who is eligible to vote?

All active and associate members as of November 30 preceding the election are entitled to vote.

Deadline to send in ballots

All ballots will be picked up for tabulation from Box 1000 in Edmonton at 9 a.m. on March 22, 2013. All ballots should be returned by mail on or before March 12, 2013 (using prepaid return envelopes sent with the ballots) to ensure they are at Barnett House for the official count on election day. Ballots must not be sent to, or dropped off at, any Association office, as bylaws require ballots to be received at the designated post office box.

Election Results

Results of the 2013 Provincial Executive Council Election will be published on the Association’s website within 24 hours of the ballot count and published in the ATA News (March 26, 2013).

NoteDates and deadlines mentioned in the above information are in accordance with Association bylaws.

Who will be your next ATA President?

After two terms as ATA president, Carol Henderson will be stepping down and making way for a new leader of the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

In the 2013 Provincial Executive Council Election, two candidates are in the running for the office of president; four are in the hunt for two vice- president positions; and two candidates are in the race for office of District Representative Central North. Election day is March 22, 2013.

With the acclamation of three new district representatives, almost half of the faces around the Provincial Executive Council table will be new when the 2013/14 school year begins.
